Rule of Rounding

The general rule of rounding is if the last number is greater than or equal to 5, then the number is rounded up.

Rounding to the Nearest Tens: 423.5

  1. First identify the tens digit, which is 2 in 423.5

  2. Identify the next smallest place value, which is 3 in 432.5

  3. Since the digit is less than 5, you round down, and then the tens digit remains the same. Every digit after becomes a zero and the digits after the decimal point are dropped. Therefore, rounding 423.5 to the nearest tens is 420.

Round Half Away from Zero Method

As the name suggests, this method rounds half values away from zero. There are no biases towards negative or positive numbers except away from zero. Whether you round a negative or a positive number, the absolute value results remain the same. If the number you want to round is negative, you can round the digits as you would as a positive value.

Positive Numbers

Numbers greater than or equal to the halfway point between 2 and 3 which is 2.5, round up, away from 0. On the other hand, numbers less than the halfway point between 2 and 3, round down towards 0

For example:

  • 2.3 rounds down to 2

  • 2.47 rounds down to 2

  • 2.5 rounds up to 3 (halfway, up and away from 0)

  • 2.53 rounds up to 3

Negative Numbers

Numbers less than or equal to the halfway point -2.5 between -2 and -3 round down away from 0. Numbers greater than the halfway point -2.5, round up toward 0.

For example:

  • -2.3 rounds down to -2

  • -2.47 rounds down to -2

  • -2.5 rounds up to -3 (halfway, down, and away from 0)

  • -2.53 rounds up to -3

  • -2.6 rounds up to -3
